how to calculate albedo

how to calculate albedo

As Earth orbits the sun, its tilted axis always points in the same direction. That's . At this station you will measure the albedo of different surfaces such as grass, sand, dirt, asphalt, snow, or concrete. The average albedo of the Earth from the upper atmosphere, its planetary albedo, is 3035% because of cloud cover, but widely varies locally across the surface because of different geological and environmental features.[4]. As noted in the anomaly plot below, global albedo rose and fell in different years, but did not necessarily head in either direction for long. Although albedo can be very different in different locations and can change depending on the season and amount of cloud cover, the average albedo of the entire Earth is consistently about 0.3. This may have both been co-caused by climate change as well as a substantial increase in global warming. The MCD43A Calculated Albedo Product is available through the MODIS Global Subsetting and Visualization Tool maintained by the ORNL DAAC. The highest average albedo, however, is found in clouds. German: Gre und Gewicht, Volumen und Gewicht, Rechteckige Platte, Rohr, Wrmeausdehnung, Verschieden dichte Stoffe mischen, Prozentuale Mischung, Gewicht (Masse) hochrechnen, Volumen hochrechnen, Verdrngung, Spezifisches Volumen, Spezifischer Widerstand, Fluss, Albedo. In this way, albedo affects day-to-day weather. Dark colors have an albedo close to zero, meaning little or no energy is reflected. Two methods are used to calculate daily mean albedo from MODIS data. Albedo is a non-dimensional, unitless quantity that indicates how well a surface reflects solar energy. Albedo is a non-dimensional, unitless quantity that indicates how well a surface reflects solar energy. endstream endobj 75 0 obj <>stream Note that Landsat band 2 (green) is not used. Quantifying the albedo variability is a requirement of IEC for proper uncertainty evaluation of the performance test of bifacial PV systems (see site survey) Photometric stereo is a method for reconstruction of the depth map (the surface) and albedo of an object from several photographs of the object in a fixed position but under different lighting conditions. Additionally, since 1979, the Arctic sea ice extent has declined on average -13% per decade, from a high of 7.54 million square kilometers in September 1980, to a low of 3.39 million square kilometers in September 2012. heat energy from sunlight) provides chemical energy for plants, determines temperature for the day, and drives the water, atmospheric, and ocean cycles. Albedo can be entered with 1, 2, or 3 decimal places and has an allowable range of .01 to .90. Over 3m there is very little impact. The amount of energy reflected by a surface is called albedo. First Monthly CERES Global Longwave and Shortwave Radiation, NASA Goddard Space In this case, the surface albedo and atmospheric scattering are both included. Because the air is at different temperatures, it also is at a different pressure. Some of the colors are dark, such as the blue of the ocean, brown soil, and green forests. A value of 0 means the surface is a "perfect absorber" that absorbs all incoming energy. In the case of evergreen forests with seasonal snow cover albedo reduction may be great enough for deforestation to cause a net cooling effect. Try refreshing the page, or contact customer support. [29] Spectral albedo strongly affects the performance of bifacial solar cells where rear surface performance gains of over 20% have been observed for c-Si cells installed above healthy vegetation. [citation needed], Cryoconite, powdery windblown dust containing soot, sometimes reduces albedo on glaciers and ice sheets. Snow on top of this sea ice increases the albedo to 0.9. This increases the temperature of the snow even more and it melts faster in a positive feedback loop. The first and third line of globes show MISR blue, green, and red band DHR, combined to create a natural color DHR. Credit: UCAR SciEd with NASA image. This global picture of reflectivity (also called albedo) appears to be a muddle, with different areas reflecting more or less sunlight over the 12-year record. Seasonal changes can also impact the albedo of different areas as surfaces change. Any albedo in visible light falls within a range of about 0.9 for fresh snow to about 0.04 for charcoal, one of the darkest substances. A layer of snowfall increases local albedo, reflecting away sunlight, leading to local cooling. At small angles of incident light, waviness results in reduced reflectivity because of the steepness of the reflectivity-vs.-incident-angle curve and a locally increased average incident angle.[36]. Distance from the Sun simply affects the amount of incident energy on the planet. There has been no sunlight or even twilight since early October. Throughout the year, different parts of Earth get the suns direct rays. Note that white caps on waves look white (and have high albedo) because the water is foamed up, so there are many superimposed bubble surfaces which reflect, adding up their reflectivities. Ouyang et al. It was fluctuating a lot by year, though. Earth's planetary albedo is about 31% meaning that about a third of the solar energy that gets to Earth is reflected out to space. This is largely because most students taking such courses are generally not science majors, so they are likely to take few, if any, other science courses. Because the amount of radiation reflected back can never be more than the amount that hits the surface, the albedo of any surface must always be between zero and one. I want calculate albedo only for bands with 10 m spatial resolution, therefore using only B2, B3, B4 and B8 bands. [59] Although such reflectance properties are different from those of any terrestrial terrains, they are typical of the regolith surfaces of airless Solar System bodies. [39] A study following the burning of the Kuwaiti oil fields during Iraqi occupation showed that temperatures under the burning oil fires were as much as 10C (18F) colder than temperatures several miles away under clear skies.[40]. Albedo is a key parameter that is widely used in land surface energy balance studies, mid-to-long-term weather prediction, and global climate change investigation. Albedo can be demonstrated using an example of a black and white car. Dark ocean waters have an albedo of only 0.05-0.10. And when the South Pole tilts toward the Sun, its winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Single scattering albedo, 0, is defined as scatabs scat which is fraction of total extinction that is due to scattering. Earth's surface albedo is regularly estimated via Earth observation satellite sensors such as NASA's MODIS instruments on board the Terra and Aqua satellites, and the CERES instrument on the Suomi NPP and JPSS. An albedo value is a fractional amount between 0 and 1. All other trademarks and copyrights are the property of their respective owners. Snow albedo is highly variable, ranging from as high as 0.9 for freshly fallen snow, to about 0.4 for melting snow, and as low as 0.2 for dirty snow. First of all, we experience day and night because the Earth is always rotating upon its axis, but Earths axis is actually tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. In the Arctic, receding ice threatens biota, such as polar bears, as available habitat continues to decline. Image of the Day Deciduous trees have an albedo value of about 0.15 to 0.18 whereas coniferous trees have a value of about 0.09 to 0.15. Dark colors have an albedo close to zero, meaning little or no energy is reflected. Try the simulation below to explore how the Sun's brightness and the Earth's albedo affect global climate. Albedo can be measured using satellite imagery or a pyranometer device. r In this project, you will be implementing a Photometric Stereo algorithm. Using satellite measurements accumulated since the late 1970s, scientists estimate Earth's average albedo is about about 0.30. The albedo, or reflectivity of the surface, would also contribute to this energy intake. {\displaystyle {\hat {\sigma }}_{\text{OC}}<0.1} Albedo varies between 0 and 1. "[38], Albedo and climate in some areas are affected by artificial clouds, such as those created by the contrails of heavy commercial airliner traffic. The last remaining CERES instrument will fly on the JPSS-1 satellite, and a follow-on, the Radiation Budget Instrument (RBI), will fly on JPSS-2. The value tells, how many percent of the incoming light is reflected. Answer. Studies by the Hadley Centre have investigated the relative (generally warming) effect of albedo change and (cooling) effect of carbon sequestration on planting forests. We can see it as a faint glow around the shadowed part of the moon at night. The ice-albedo feedback causes increased ocean warming, exacerbating the rate of ice melting. Albedo is also involved in climate and weather earth system processes, such as cloud cooling and ice-albedo feedback. Therefore, they are hotter. New asphalt pavements are quite black and have little exposed aggregate and thus have low albedos (typically less than 0.10). The globes cover most of Asia, eastern Europe and the Middle East, for each of the four seasons in the years 2003 and 2004. [41] As per Spracklen et al. In real life, objects in the Solar System have albedo values between 0 and 1. As snow or ice melts, albedo decreases because the reflectiveness of the surface decreases. Atmosphere, Image of the Day These higher temperatures can cause people to become dehydrated or suffer from heat exhaustion. Ratio of how much light is reflected back from a body, White-sky, black-sky, and blue-sky albedo. Heat. They found that new forests in tropical and midlatitude areas tended to cool; new forests in high latitudes (e.g., Siberia) were neutral or perhaps warming.[32]. Point the lightmeter directly to the incoming light source (sun or lamp). D Albedo is important for the profound implications it has on the climate of the Earth and local weather patterns. C Your teacher will provide you with a light meter. [25] Over Antarctica snow albedo averages a little more than 0.8. [43], Another albedo-related effect on the climate is from black carbon particles. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology. A pure white surface has an albedo of 1. If Earth were frozen entirely (and hence be more reflective), the average temperature of the planet would drop below 40C (40F). To calculate the actual amount of the solar energy flux that is absorbed by the atmosphere and surface of a planet, we have to account for the albedo by reducing the incoming flux by a factor of 1 - . The authors have calculated albedo, surface emissivity and thermal inertia for a small region in Europe using the AVHRR data. The FAO Penman-Monteith method is recommended as the sole ET o method for determining reference evapotranspiration. [3] Due to measurement constraints, it is often given for the spectrum in which most solar energy reaches the surface (between 0.3 and 3 m). For land surfaces, it has been shown that the albedo at a particular solar zenith angle i can be approximated by the proportionate sum of two terms: with )L^6 g,qm"[Z[Z~Q7%" [45][failed verification], Human activities (e.g., deforestation, farming, and urbanization) change the albedo of various areas around the globe. So if the image value is 0.37 then the reflectance is 37%. .or subscribe to Freechoice One login - many tracking-free offers! At higher and higher altitudes, the atmosphere becomes so thin that it essentially ceases to exist. The term albedo was introduced into optics by Johann Heinrich Lambert in his 1760 work Photometria. On the other hand, if Earth was covered by a dark green forest canopy, the albedo would be about 0.14 (most of the sunlight would get absorbed). These calculations are based on the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), which describes how the reflectance of a given surface depends on the view angle of the observer and the solar angle. Because of the Earths axial tilt, the Arctic Circle sees dramatic day/night cycles depending on the season. [8] Variation in summer albedo across both forest types is associated with maximum rates of photosynthesis because plants with high growth capacity display a greater fraction of their foliage for direct interception of incoming radiation in the upper canopy. emissions associated to changes in surface albedo are a consequence of land transformation" and can reduce surface temperature increases associated with climate change. I was struck by a driver who ran a red light coming the other way. I broke my wrist and was rushed to the ER. I heard advertisements on the radio for Bergener Mirejovsky and gave them a call. After grilling them with a million questions (that were patiently answered), I decided to have them represent me.

Mr. Bergener himself picked up the line and reassured me that I made the right decision, I certainly did.

My case manager was meticulous. She would call and update me regularly without fail. Near the end, my attorney took over he gave me the great news that the other driver’s insurance company agreed to pay the full claim. I was thrilled with Bergener Mirejovsky! First Rate!!

T. S.     |     Car Accident

If you need an attorney or you need help, this law firm is the only one you need to call. We called a handful of other attorneys, and they all were unable to help us. Bergener Mirejovsky said they would fight for us and they did. These attorneys really care. God Bless you for helping us through our horrible ordeal.

J. M.     |     Slip & Fall

I had a great experience with Bergener Mirejovsky from the start to end. They knew what they were talking about and were straight forward. None of that beating around the bush stuff. They hooked me up with a doctor to get my injuries treated right away. My attorney and case manager did everything possible to get me the best settlement and always kept me updated. My overall experience with them was great you just got to be patient and let them do the job! … Thanks, Bergener Mirejovsky!

G. P.     |     Car Accident

I was impressed with Bergener Mirejovsky. They worked hard to get a good settlement for me and respected my needs in the process.

T. W.     |     Personal Injury

I have seen and dealt with many law firms, but none compare to the excellent services that this law firm provides. Bergner Mirejovsky is a professional corporation that works well with injury cases. They go after the insurance companies and get justice for the injured.  I would strongly approve and recommend their services to anyone involved with injury cases. They did an outstanding job.

I was in a oregon state championship series mx when I was t-boned by an uninsured driver. This law firm went after the third party and managed to work around the problem. Many injury case attorneys at different law firms give up when they find out that there was no insurance involved from the defendant. Bergner Mirejovsky made it happen for me, and could for you. Thank you, Bergner Mirejovsky.

I had a good experience with Bergener Mirejovski law firm. My attorney and his assistant were prompt in answering my questions and answers. The process of the settlement is long, however. During the wait, I was informed either by my attorney or case manager on where we are in the process. For me, a good communication is an important part of any relationship. I will definitely recommend this law firm.

I was rear ended in a wayne cooper obituary. I received a concussion and other bodily injuries. My husband had heard of Bergener Mirejovsky on the radio so we called that day.  Everyone I spoke with was amazing! I didn’t have to lift a finger or do anything other than getting better. They also made sure I didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket. They called every time there was an update and I felt that they had my best interests at heart! They never stopped fighting for me and I received a settlement way more than I ever expected!  I am happy that we called them! Thank you so much! Love you guys!  Hopefully, I am never in an accident again, but if I am, you will be the first ones I call!

J. T.     |     Car Accident

It’s easy to blast someone online. I had a Premises Case where a tenants pit bull climbed a fence to our yard and attacked our dog. My dog and I were bitten up. I had medical bills for both. Bergener Mirejovsky recommended I get a psychological review.

I DO BELIEVE they pursued every possible avenue.  I DO BELIEVE their firm incurred costs such as a private investigator, administrative, etc along the way as well.  Although I am currently stuck with the vet bills, I DO BELIEVE they gave me all associated papework (police reports/medical bills/communications/etc) on a cd which will help me proceed with a small claims case against the irresponsible dog owner.

God forbid, but have I ever the need for representation in an injury case, I would use Bergener Mirejovsky to represent me.  They do spell out their terms on % of payment.  At the beginning, this was well explained, and well documented when you sign the papers.

S. D.     |     Dog Bite

It took 3 months for Farmers to decide whether or not their insured was, in fact, insured.  From the beginning they denied liability.  But, Bergener Mirejovsky did not let up. Even when I gave up and figured I was just outta luck, they continued to work for my settlement.  They were professional, communicative, and friendly.  They got my medical bills reduced, which I didn’t expect. I will call them again if ever the need arises.

T. W.     |     Car Accident

I had the worst luck in the world as I was rear ended 3 times in 2 years. (Goodbye little Red Kia, Hello Big Black tank!) Thank goodness I had Bergener Mirejovsky to represent me! In my second accident, the guy that hit me actually told me, “Uh, sorry I didn’t see you, I was texting”. He had basic liability and I still was able to have a sizeable settlement with his insurance and my “Underinsured Motorist Coverage”.

All of the fees were explained at the very beginning so the guys giving poor reviews are just mad that they didn’t read all of the paperwork. It isn’t even small print but standard text.

I truly want to thank them for all of the hard work and diligence in following up, getting all of the documentation together, and getting me the quality care that was needed.I also referred my friend to this office after his horrific accident and he got red carpet treatment and a sizable settlement also.

Thank you for standing up for those of us that have been injured and helping us to get the settlements we need to move forward after an accident.

J. V.     |     Personal Injury

Great communication… From start to finish. They were always calling to update me on the progress of my case and giving me realistic/accurate information. Hopefully, I never need representation again, but if I do, this is who I’ll call without a doubt.

R. M.     |     Motorcycle Accident

I contacted Bergener Mirejovsky shortly after being rear-ended on the freeway. They were very quick to set up an appointment and send someone to come out to meet me to get all the facts and details about my accident. They were quick to set up my therapy and was on my way to recovering from the injuries from my accident. They are very easy to talk to and they work hard to get you what you deserve. Shortly before closing out my case trader joe's harvest grain salad personally reached out to me to see if how I felt about the outcome of my case. He made sure I was happy and satisfied with the end results. Highly recommended!!!

Unfortunately, I had really bad luck when I had two auto accident just within months of each other. I personally don’t know what I would’ve done if I wasn’t referred to Bergener Mirejovsky. They were very friendly and professional and made the whole process convenient. I wouldn’t have gone to any other firm. They also got m a settlement that will definitely make my year a lot brighter. Thank you again
