Early Saturday morning a family car was driving along Interstate 15 when a suspected DUI driver was driving the wrong way collided head on with the family car near Scripps Ranch.
The fatal crash occurred around 3:10 p.m. on southbound I-15 just north of Mira Mesa Boulevard.
According to CHP officers the suspected drunk driver was driving a black Audi A4 the wrong way on the express lanes. The other involved vehicle was a Honda Civic carrying a family of five.
The Honda Civic saw the vehicle driving the wrong way and changed lanes to avoid hitting the vehicle, but the black Audi simultaneously changed lanes colliding with the vehicle head-on.
The impact between the two cars were so strong, both the driver of the Honda Civic, an 55-year-old male and his 84-year-old mother were pronounced dead at the scene.
There were three passengers between the ages of 19 and 20 in the car that had to be extricated out of the vehicle by firefighters.
The Audi landed on the center divider along the freeway and the driver of the Audi had to be extricated out of the vehicle as well.
All four survivors of the fatal crash were transported to local hospitals with major injuries.
CHP officials have arrested the driver of the Audi on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The deadly accident remains under investigation.
