Karla Thiel was struck and killed on Saturday evening while riding her bicycle on Longview Road in Antelope Valley. A Littlerock resident was traveling southbound in his Camry when he hit Thiel. It was night, and Thiel was not using lights or wearing any reflective clothing.
Thiel had been homeless for several years and suffered from mental illness. Residents of the Pearblossom area who knew her have said that she frequently rode and walked the roads and night when visibility was poor. Our thoughts are with Thiel’s family and friends.
The police are not pressing changes against the driver.
The chances of bicycle and pedestrian accidents go up at night. This is especially true in the fall and winter months when days are short. Both drivers and cyclists can take certain precautions to prevent a tragedy.
