A 26-year-old suspected DUI driver slammed into a patrol car, injuring a deputy early Friday morning in West Hollywood.
The incident occurred in the 8900 block of Santa Monica Blvd, where the deputy was conducting a traffic stop.
The deputy saw over his shoulder a Mercedes-Benz SUV speeding toward him.
He was able to jump out of the way, but the SUV slammed into the back of the patrol vehicle. Which then struck the deputy throwing him onto the hood of the patrol car.
The nine year veteran was able to radio the sheriff’s West Hollywood station and notify personnel of the accident.
He was transported to the hospital and was released later that day.
It was suspected that the driver of SUV was texting and driving under the influence. The man was arrested for DUI and was released the same day.
The other drivers were not injured.
Sheriff’s Detective Heald is asking for any witnesses with information to come forward and call 310-855-8850.
Distracted driving and driving under the influence is a deadly combination. Never drive when you are under the influence and avoid distracted driving behaviors. You are not only placing yourself in danger, but those around you.
