Early this Tuesday morning a four vehicle car accident in Van Nuys has injured all five people involved. Several of them were listed in critical condition. The accident occurred just after midnight in the intersection of Van Nuys and Victory Boulevards.
A 19-year-old driver in a VW Passat blew through a red light, slamming full speed into the side of a Chevrolet SUV. The SUV flipped, landing roof first on top of another car. A fourth vehicle was also involved. The driver responsible is suspected of drunk driving. Police officers who responded to the scene said the young man showed signs of alcohol during a preliminary test. Drivers under the legal drinking age of 21 are not allowed to have any alcohol in their system while behind the wheel. His identity has not been released.
All the vehicles involved appear to be totaled. The people involved in the crash were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. All five are said to have serious injuries. The SUV driver, a woman in her 20’s, is in very critical condition with life-threatening injuries. She and her passenger had to be extricated by the fire department using the jaws of life.
The LA Police Department is still conducting an investigation of the accident. Officers believe the driver of the Passat was traveling at least twice over the posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour.
It is clear that the 19-year-old driver is at fault in this incident. Police are stationed at the hospital, and will decide what charges to press after the investigation is complete. He was driving recklessly, resulting in serious harm to others, but his blood alcohol content will document the extent of his negligence.
