This Thursday afternoon a vehicle crashed into Oledina’s Cake Factory in Glendale. One man was killed and five others were injured in the incident. The driver, who has been described as a woman in her 60’s, was apparently uninjured in the crash.
The bakery is located in a shopping center on East Broadway. The driver was navigating the center’s parking lot at the time of the tragedy. Although we do not yet know the exact circumstances that led to this accident, it’s possible the woman was parked in front of the bakery and stepped on her gas assuming she was in reverse. Similar incidents have happened this way.
Liability in an auto accident such as this is reasonably clear. An unsafe decision or mistake on the part of the driver led to a situation that put several pedestrians into severe danger. It is a sad fact that more than 70,000 pedestrians in the United States were injured or killed last year alone. About six hundred pedestrians are killed and thirteen thousand are injured in California traffic accidents every year. Due to a person’s extreme vulnerability compared to a moving vehicle, these accidents often result in serious injuries or fatalities, even at low speeds.
