Two women have been hospitalized after being shot at by Los Angeles police in Torrance early Thursday morning. Police departments throughout California and nearby states are currently on a manhunt for Christopher Jordan Dorner, an ex-LAPD officer on a rampage.
The women, a mother and her daughter, were delivering newspapers from a blue pickup truck on Redbeam Avenue at the time of the shooting. After the incident the back of their vehicle was riddled with bullet holes. They were both injured by the gunfire and were transferred to a nearby hospital.
Dorner is thought to be on the run in a silver Nissan Titan pickup truck, which must have been what attracted the officers’ attention to the innocent women. Dorner is suspected in shooting three police officers, one of whom has died.
He is also suspected in shooting and killing a young couple in Irvine this past Sunday; the woman was the daughter of a retired Los Angeles police captain.
It is understandable that the Los Angeles Police Department will be on high alert until Dorner is apprehended. However, this incident is a shocking example of police excessive force. The investigation of the incident is still under way, but it is unlikely that the officers involved had a good reason to fire upon two unarmed women. Apparently officers fired at the back of the truck and it is not clear as of yet whether they made a proper effort to ascertain who was driving prior to shooting.
We wish the injured women a fast recovery. We hope that Dorner is apprehended soon, without any further injuries to civilians or law enforcement.
